Da Bai is a variety of Camellia sinensis var. sinensis from which white tea is made. Da Bai (English: big white) means the appearance of the tea leaf. Compared to other varieties, this one is bigger and has a whitish color. Da Bai was originally grown in Fuding, however, nowadys is also grown in other regions.

Tea made of Da Bai

Teas such as Darjeeling white, Ceylon white, Malawi white etc. are strictly spoken, not real white teas because they are not made of the Da Bai varietal but an "ordinary" one. The term "white" refers to the high proportion of hairy, white leaf buds (Pekoe) in tea.
