Sen no Rikyu, mit ursprünglichem Namen ''Yoshiro'', wurde 1522 in der Handelsstadt Sakai (heutiges Osaka) geboren. Rikyu, der bereits in jungen Jahren die Teezeremonie studierte, gebrauchte jedoch den koreanischen Familiennamen ''Sen'' nach seinem Großvater ''Sen’ami'', einem koreanischen Einwanderer. Sein erster Lehrer war Kitamuki Dochin, der ihn traditionellen Stil der Teezeremonie unterrichtete. Später lernte er von Takeno Joo den neuen Stil kennen. Takeo Joo war ein Mann mit einfachem Geschmack und kultiviertem, diszipliniertem Lebensstil und beeinflusste Sen No Rikyu wesentlich. Auf den Vorschlag von Takeno Joo hin begann er, an den Zen-Übungen des Daitoku-ji Tempel, welcher schon eine lange Zeit eine intensive Verbindung zur Teezeremonie hatte, teilzunehmen.

Sen no Rikyu was a renowned tea master and had a major influence on the development of Japanese tea ceremony.
