Benihikari is a cross between Benikaori and a Chinese cultivar (Camellia sinensis var. sinensis). It was 1952 by the Makurazaki Black Tea Experiment Station in Kagoshima prefecture developed. Benihikari is high yielding and resistent against pests. Due to it's high Assam proportion it got high astringency and isn't suitable for green tea. Therefor it's mainly used to produce black tea.
